The CAPPA Labor Doula Training


Ready to become proficient when offering professional labor support? Take the first step towards becoming a Certified Labor Doula with CAPPA.  This eighteen-hour workshop meets the first requirement of your CLD program and prepares you to work through the steps for certification. This course is designed to provide a foundational skill base, knowledge, and perspectives on professional labor support for perinatal professionals, as well as providing training for those seeking certification as certified labor doulas with CAPPA.


Offering 18 CAPPA Contact Hours. Nursing contact hours potentially available on request.


The CAPPA Labor Doula Training Class includes the CAPPA Labor Doula Manual, and covers the following topics:


·                 CAPPA certification and policies

·                 Practical application of Scope of Practice, ethics, and integrity

·                 Building bridges with medical/midwifery professionals

·                 Modeling and teaching positive communication and self-advocacy

·                 Support for every stage of labor and birth

·                 Hands on practice of proven comfort measures and labor support techniques

·                 Emotional support for labor and birth, as well as unexpected events

·                 Hospital procedures – risk/benefit as well as alternatives and support

·                 Cesarean and VBAC support

·                 Prenatal and postpartum consultations and support

·                 Breastfeeding initiation and support

·                 Business development, marketing, and networking to create a successful career

·                 And much more!


This Labour Doula Training is the first step in becoming a CAPPA Certified Labour Doula. This training will give you the knowledge and confidence you will need to start your new career working with women and families during their pregnancy and birth.


We will cover topics including:

•          All about CAPPA and how to become certified and how we support you in your journey

•          What a doula does and doesn’t do – A doulas scope of practice

•          What happens in labour and how a doula supports the Mum and her other support people

•          How to support a Mum when interventions become a part of the labour and birth

•          How a doula supports during a Caesarean Section or a VBAC

•          What pre and postpartum support involves

•          How to handle unexpected events for both the family and the doula

•          Breastfeeding and postpartum support in the first few hours and days after birth

•          Starting your doula business and so much more…

This workshop will have plenty of hands on practice and group work as well as a little homework after the second day.

Registration includes manual and all handouts, some goodies to start your ‘Doula Bag', catered lunch on Sunday and chocolate….

Refund Policy: If CAPPA Faculty cancels the workshop, the entire fee will be refunded. All other cancellations will be charged a 25% processing fee. If the cancellation is made within 14 days of the workshop, no refund will be given. Cancellations prior to training have the option of having payment applied to a training workshop given by the same CAPPA Faculty within 12 months. (No-shows are not eligible for registration transfer.) Only ONE transfer of registration is permitted. If applicant does not attend a workshop within 12 months, all fees are forfeited. I understand I should not make non-refundable travel arrangements unless I have received confirmation from CAPPA Faculty that the training is confirmed


Faculty Bio: Kimberley Fernandez is a veteran Certified Labour and Postpartum Doula, as well as a CAPPA Certified Childbirth Educator. She trained as a CAPPA Doula back in 2006 and has been a member of the CAPPA Faculty since 2013. She is also a published author of articles and stories surrounding birth, breastfeeding and the postpartum period as well as being the Director of Accreditation and Certification for the Association of Ontario Doulas. Kimberley has a passion for supporting not just her birth and postpartum clients but also her trainees. She actively mentors her trainees through answering their questions via a Facebook mentoring group, emails, texts and phone calls. Her greatest joy however comes from her family. She is the mother of three incredible teenagers, as well as a zoo keeper to an array of fur and fin babies.


NOTE: Each student must be in attendance during the entirety of the training provided in order to receive a certificate of attendance for this Training Class.
